The Best Gift I Ever Received

We all know the holidays aren’t solely about giving or receiving gifts but they are an essential piece of the magic of them.

Historically, one of the main reasons we have the custom of giving and receiving presents at Christmas is to remind us of the presents given to Jesus by the Wise Men. The gifts of Frankincense, Gold and Myrrh were given to given as a promise to worship Jesus by the Jewish faith.

The modern era brought with the tradition of giving gifts to loved ones at Christmas and it became increasingly popular as the middle ages ended and the modern era went into full swing.

The folks over at FTD recently asked me a question, what is the best gift I’ve ever received? And that took a lot of thought and self-reflection. It was then I realized the best gift wasn’t receiving one, but giving one instead.

Every time I give my friends and loved ones a gift – whether it’s during the holiday season or not – I am filled with the joy of knowing I could make that person happier knowing they were loved and thought of – for me, this is the best gift I could ever receive.

Most of us know that “things” do not bring happiness. And if they do, it’s momentarily, but when you give something away to someone, something you love and cherish, that’s where the magic happens.

In that moment of giving, you can feel your inner light beaming with gratitude and appreciation. Being able to share that moment in time with folks you know and love, and yes, even strangers are more cherished moments that any gift you can receive.

My most beloved memories are those of not receiving gifts, but in giving them. Think about the time you gave someone a gift – think about you felt. Yes, there’s the best gift you could ever receive. Think about how blessed you are that you are alive in that moment to share your loving light and fill the receiver with some of the best parts of you! 

Yes, in my life I’ve received wonderful gifts and for that, I am always grateful but, it’s not until I fully appreciated that giving gifts is truly the way to finding your bliss – that’s when I knew the true nature of what it means to receive. 

Luckily, I was able to discover that in my early youth and have spent a lifetime of being able to share my joy with others. Gift giving can take many forms – maybe it’s teaching someone a super trick or tip they never knew before, or maybe it’s one of your favorite recipes they now love to prepare for their family and friends. Gift giving is sharing a part of you – a piece of who you are and what you love the most.
