Upcycle An Old Wine Jug Using Ombré Jute And Paint

Sharing is Caring! ❤️

If you have an old wine jug you are going to love this upcycle. Using jute for crafting creates beautiful decorative elements. Grab an old wine jug and because you are going to love transforming it into an ombre jute decorative vase.

You can easily create this beautiful vase from any old wine bottle or jug you have handy. Upcycling is so rewarding and great for the environment too!

Wine Jug

Last week, the hubby and I went to an outdoor flea market when this pair of old wine jugs caught my eye. They were in bad shape but, I saw potential in their unique shape.

The creative juices started flowing and I knew I would be able to transform them both into something decorative and beautiful. The first thing I did was give them a good washing and sterilized them in the dishwasher. They were nasty!

I’m not exactly sure what I’m going to do yet with the other one. I’m sure it will involve jute! First, I knew I wanted to paint them both white. I am in love with Fusions Mineral Paint in Raw Silk and knew that was the color they were going to be.

This was just one quick coat – once I added the second coat of paint, I knew I chose the right color.

I had some beautiful ombre yarn and knew it would blend beautifully with the jute, so I began to twist it around the jute cord to create an ombre effect. That’s the thing about working with jute, it’s so easy to create so many beautiful patterns and designs.

The hardest part of this project was twisting the yarn around the jute. Other than that, it was a wonderfully relaxing project. I love the results and the pops of colors.

I used my handmade Jute Placemat as the base for this old wine jug, and I love how the colors complement with my upcycled accent table

Here’s a list of things you will need to get started.

  1. Jute – I got mine from Oriental Trading – I love their jute. It’s the best I’ve worked with.
  2. Glue Gun
  3. Wine Jug
  4. Ombre Colored Yarn
  5. Chalk Paint or any paint you have on hand

Here’s a  list of the steps:

Step One: You can use any old wine jug or bottle to create this craft. I love the shape of an old wine jug for it but feel free to use any bottle you like. Make sure you clean the bottle well.

Step Two: Make sure the surface is free of dirt and debris then apply your paint color. Be sure to let the first coat of paint dry before applying the second coat. You might need 2-3 coats of paint depending on your choice of paint.

Step Three: While the paint is drying, start your yarn twisting. You can do it in sections or leave the jute whole and begin wrapping the yarn. I like to work with one whole piece of jute. I used the twists in the jute as my guideline. It’s a good idea to measure just how much jute you will need depending on the size of your jug or bottle. Add a tiny dab of glue to attach the yarn securely to the jute. You only have to glue one end of the yarn to the jute and glue the end of the yard to the jute when you are done.

Step Four: Begin twisting and gluing the jute around your jug. Where you start and stop is up to you. Use your glue to secure the jute to the jug.

Yes, it’s that easy! You can make any design or pattern you like. Let your imagination be your guide.

There are a few different sizes of jute. I worked with the larger size which measures 7mm x 30 ft.

I added a block of the ombre yard by itself to the old wine jug as I wanted some depth and dimension to it as well. I love using color blocking and the yarn worked out perfectly.

As far as the other old wine jug, I’m not exactly sure what I plan on doing with it, but I’m sure it will involve some jute and some color!
