If you are like me, I’ll do whatever it takes for the perfect night’s sleep. Finding the best pillow took me over a year, but I’ve finally nailed it!
Getting the perfect night’s sleep is so important to your health both mentally and physically so why not do everything you can to ensure that you are using the best pillow too?
Are you frustrated with your pillow and not getting a good night’s sleep? I was, and it took me over a year researching and testing until I finally found the best pillow for both me and my husband.
Don’t make the same mistakes I made when shopping for a new pillow. There are some things you can do before you buy your pillow to make sure are getting the right one! Your health is far too important to not take pillow shopping seriously.
Here’s a list of things you need to do when shopping for the best pillow.
1 – Is It Time To Replace My Pillow?
We all know that pillows don’t last forever. There’s no reason to sleep on a pillow that’s lumpy and sagging. This is your health we are talking about so why compromise? There is a simple test you can do to a traditional fiber-filled pillow to see if it’s time to toss it.
Fold it in half and place a book on top of it, if it springs back to shape – you know it still has some life to it. If it stays folded, it’s time to trash it. If you own a memory pillow and it’s starting to get crumbly or seems to be losing its shape, it also needs to go.
2 – Pillow Materials – Get To Know Them.
There are several types of pillow materials. If you want to read all about the pros and cons of each type, you can do that too. It’s so overwhelming and can be so confusing too.
We all have the temptation to buy the first one we try and that can turn out to be a big mistake. It took me a year to find the perfect pillow, and I’m thrilled I took the time to read and research and try them out too. This pillow guide is a good start.
Types of pillow materials include:
- Visco-Elastic – Memory Foam Pillows
- Shredded Memory Foam Pillows
- Latex Pillows
- Feather Pillows – Down Pillows
- Polyester Fiberfill Pillows
- Gel Pillows
- Buckwheat Pillows
- Microbead Pillows
- Kapok Pillows
- Water Pillows
3 – Take Into Account How You Sleep
The type of material you choose can determine how supportive and comfortable the pillow is. Pillows are like shoes – just because a pair fits me perfectly doesn’t mean it will you. Reading reviews was probably one of the most helpful things I did when deciding which pillow to buy.
If you are side-sleeper you might need a thicker pillow. Generally, stomach-sleepers need thinner pillows and back sleepers can fall somewhere in the middle. But, there are always exceptions to that as well. The best pillows should support your neck and should align with your spine too.
4 – Pillow Care – Read The Instructions
Always check the label to make sure you are taking proper care of your pillow. Personally, I believe machine wash pillows are the way to go. After all, who wants to dry clean their pillow?
It’s recommended to wash your pillow anywhere from 3 to 4 times a year. Always use a pillow protector too. Adding a protective layer to your pillow will help extend the life of it and it’s a lot more hygienic too. I like to wash my pillows every two to four months depending on the cleaning frenzy I’m on that day.
5 – Test It Out
Since it’s almost impossible to test a pillow out in a store, you’ll want to check the return policy to ensure you can exchange it or return it.
If you feel your neck tipping forward or backward or seems uncomfortable in any way, send it back. You can leave the plastic covering on the pillow and test it at home before returning it.
6 – Your Best Pillow Might Not Be Your Best Forever
Let’s face it, everything changes. That mattress you bought 10 years ago can be a nightmare today, and I’m sure your body or health has changed and so will your pillow needs. Remember, there’s no reason to be stuck with a pillow that’s making you miserable.
It literally took me almost a year of searching and testing before I found the best pillow for me and my husband. I think most of the hesitancy was because I was scared I wouldn’t find a pillow that would give us the perfect night’s sleep – and that’s what I wanted.
And, don’t forget to make sure you have the perfect pillow for travel or power naps too!
That’s why I was thrilled when I discovered pillows from a company called Sleepgram. I got mine from their website Sleepgram.com and for the past two weeks, I’ve not looked back.
