The best part is you can tweak it and create variations as you like – the key is the dressing! I’ve tried so many variations and finally landed on one that is simply the best, and I think you’ll agree once you’ve tried it.

After all, for a fruit salad to get a name, it has to be pretty delicious! Some folks don’t like to alter the ingredients and feel the classic version is the best but feel free to tweak it as you see fit – just one piece of advice, don’t change the dressing!

So, let’s hop to it! It’s easy to make, the ingredients are simple. Even the crème fraiche is easy to find. I found mine at my local grocery store and, it’s an ingredient you don’t want to leave out! If you can’t find crème fraiche you can always use sour cream as a replacement.

Dressing:

1/2 cup mayonnaise

1/4 cup crème fraiche sour cream

1/2 tablespoon white sugar

1/2 lemon juice (use fresh lemon)

1/8 teaspoon salt

Salad:

3 apples — peeled, cored, and chopped

1 cup of grapes sliced in half – you can use either red or green.

1 cup thinly sliced celery

1/2 cup chopped toasted walnuts

1/2 cup raisins (optional)

Directions:

Prep 20 minutes / Ready In 20 minutes

Whisk mayonnaise, crème fraiche, lemon juice, sugar, salt, black pepper together in a bowl.

Place apples, celery, grapes, and walnut pieces in a large bowl.

Toss with about 1/2 cup of dressing.

Add more dressing until salad components are well coated but not swimming in dressing. You might not need all the dressing.

Serve immediately or cover and refrigerate for up to 24 hours.

Here are some pics of the process and the end results!

I like to shave my celery – it removes all the string stuff on the top and makes for a much more pleasurable experience.

You’ll want to be sure to brown the walnuts before you add them to the mix. Browning them gives them a wonderfully rich nutty flavor. Be careful not to over-brown them. All they need it literally a few minutes in a frying pan with no oil.
