It’s no secret that reaching retirement is a major accomplishment, and many retirees enjoy celebrating this occasion with the perfect retirement party. With 29% of Americans responding that they prefer an autumnal climate, Fall is considered the favorite season of the nation.
But regardless of the time of year of your retirement party, it’s important to take the right steps to guarantee a day full of excitement and celebration of success. Here are just a few creative ideas for activities to consider when planning the perfect retirement party.
It can be so much fun planning the perfect retirement party. This game is a great way to break the ice between guests and acknowledge what you all have in common — your relationship with the retiree. Simply pass out index cards and ask each guest to write down their most beloved memory with the retiree.
Collect them in a jar and pass it around, letting each guest choose a card and read it to the crowd. The retiree then gets to try to guess whose memory it is. Or, you can all simply use this special time as an opportunity to share memories with the retiree. It’s a win-win!
If you have the preparation time, this game is a great way to get the entire crowd laughing. Start by requesting photos of each guest when they were a baby or young child (you can do this by putting a note in the invitations). Ideally, they’ll be able to send the photo before the day of the event.
Once you’ve collected all the photos, including one of the retiree, number each photo and attach them to a poster. As guests arrive, hand them a piece of scrap paper and ask them to try and guess who each photo belongs to.
To up the stakes, consider offering a small prize to whoever correctly identifies the most photos. The prize doesn’t have to be anything fancy, but it should be something that reflects the interests of the guests or retiree.
Finally, this activity is perfect for finding out who truly knows the retiree best. Simply make a short quiz, as easy or as difficult as you wish, and either make copies and let guests fill them out or read the questions aloud.
At the end of the quiz, state the right answers and whoever has the correct answers wins. Again, you can up the stakes by offering a small prize for first, and maybe even second place.
By 2030, older adults (seniors) will account for roughly 20% of the U.S. population, and after what’s essentially a lifetime of achievement in the workforce, it’s important to do your part to show the retiree in your life just how much they’re appreciated.
I worked in corporate America for over 20 years, and I know when folks retire, it’s can be a time of mixed emotions too.
And, don’t forget to stick around and help clean after the party too – especially if you host it in your house.
Why not plan the perfect retirement party for your loved ones and dear friends that will be filled with beautiful memories?
