Last week, one of my toilet bowls went bonkers out of nowhere. After each flush, it ran and ran with no end. Unless, of course, I jiggled the handle, then it calmed down and started behaving. After a few days, I knew this nonsense had to stop. Fortunately, the solution was simple and took a few minutes to repair. Luckily, home quirks don’t always require complex solutions, and every home has them.

Furthermore, if you live in an older home or apartment, you know about home quirks all too well. Whether scalding hot water from your kitchen sink or hissing old radiators that sound possessed, you can find resolute. While many of our home’s quirks are endearing, some can drive us batty.

Regardless of where you live, you will run into them, and you need to know how to resolve them. Below, you’ll discover some home quirks and what you can do to banish them from your home quickly.

1 – Flickering Lights

Most likely, the flashing lights in your home aren’t a sign of anything supernatural. Fortunately, it’s an electrical problem you can quickly resolve. Power can jump gaps if electrical connections become dangerously loose. And this is just as terrifying as a cluster of flickering lights. Arcing, which can lead to a fire, is a term the pros use to describe this problem. Circuit overloading may be to blame if lights go out when your turn on any appliance.

Of course, you’ll need to hire an electrician if the problem persists. However, what it will cost to replace a single circuit or an entire electrical panel is far less than what it would cost to restore your home to pre-fire condition. Moreover, your flickering lights can come from several different reasons. For example, it can come from a loose lightbulb, a dimmer switch issue, a faulty fixture switch, or too many appliances pulling power.

Typically, you’ll want to call in the pros for lighting issues and not tackle them yourself. However, even if your handyman skills are top-level, it’s best to reach out to the pros for help when it comes to electrical issues. When it comes to home quirks involving severe matters like this, it’s best to play it safe.

2 – Peeling Wall Paint

Moisture is most likely to blame for peeling exterior paint. On the other hand, leaking gutters or a sweltering bathroom are likely to blame. When you discover a new problem, you may be able to salvage your siding and save a pricey replacement charge if you act quickly.

So, what should you do next? First, keep the problem from happening again by eliminating the source of the moisture. For instance, you can prime and repaint after removing the loose paint with a scraper. Plus, you don’t necessarily need to hire someone to do this as a reasonably handy person can do it themselves.

Above all, the siding will rust away if you wait too long. The cost of repairing and repainting the entire house may potentially exceed $10,000! For example, A new bathroom ventilation fan with a humidity-sensing switch (around $250) should solve the problem if the source is a moist bathroom. Home quirks like this can don’t need to bum you out if you stay on top of peeling paint problems.

3 – Weird Noises In Walls – Serious Home Quirks

Termites and carpenter ants are the most common culprits because of their voracious appetites for wood. If you want to hear something, tap on a wall and put your ear up to the surface. Termites may be making a rustling noise if you hear one. Carpenter ants can cause a crinkling sound like that of cellophane.

Remedy: Contact a pest-control company. For an inspection, the price ranges from $65 to $100.

Of course, strange sounds or noises in your home can come from various causes. Primarily, you might have animals in your walls like squirrels, raccoons, or bats! Or worse, you can have an infestation of bugs! In that case, always call a good pest control company right away.

Never ignore strange sounds and call the pros for help when you hear odd sounds. If you prefer to DIY, once you find the problem, make sure you set traps or use steel wool, metal sheeting, or caulk to seal off the entrance. Home quirks like these can run the risk of health issues as well.

5 – A Running Bathroom Tank

As mentioned above, a running bathroom tank can drive you nuts and cost you money. In the course of a month, a leaky toilet can waste up to 1,500 gallons. And this can increase your water bill. So, you’ll want to fix it ASAP. In my case, we used a little WD40 to correct the problem. (WD40 fixes so many things!) We sprayed a little bit on the handle, which solved the problem. So, while this might not work in your case, it’s worth trying.

Additionally, you detangle or loosen the chain to prevent the flapper from entirely sitting and water from flowing out of the flush valve. The float ball’s tube can have a twist, so you’ll want to check and fix it. As a last resort, if the toilet tank valve and flapper don’t work, the next step is replacing the toilet tank valve and flapper (around $10 if you do it yourself and a bit more for a water-saving dual flush valve). Home quirks like these can be easily remedied, and thankfully so!

6 – Creaking Sound In Your Home

At some point, we all experience creaking sounds in our homes. And they can sound unnerving if we don’t repair them. But, primarily, they can come from the expansion and contraction of materials used to build our homes. And changes in temperature and humidity fluctuations can also cause strange sounds.

While you can easily fix some of these annoying sounds, others can’t. After all, older homes or apartments creak and moan, and there’s not much you can do about them. However, you can try sprinkling talcum powder on the joints where the floorboards meet. Then, depending on what’s creaking, you can use some WD40 which magically fixes so many things.

7 – Mold & Mildew Smells – Home Quirks That Stink

No one wants a smelly home, and we have surefire ways to remove strong odors from your home. Unfortunately, when it comes to mildew, it’s not only gross but unhealthy. Basements are a favored place to hide out for this dreadful life form. Generally, mold can grow in areas with enough humidity for condensation to form on cold surfaces.

Of course, you’ll want to keep surfaces as dry as possible to prevent mold and mildew. For example, you can use a top-rated bladeless house fan to keep the air circulating, preventing moisture buildup. If a fan doesn’t work to remove the moisture from a room, consider investing in this hOmeLabs 3,000 Sq Ft Energy Star Dehumidifier for Large Rooms and Basements. With over 41,000 five-star reviews, you know shoppers love it. And always insulate your home to keep the temperature up.

8 – Running Water That Smells Like Rotten Eggs

Bacteria that create hydrogen sulfide gas are the culprit (the scientific name for rotten-egg smell). Your water heater or drain could be the source of the problem. Your water heater is most likely to blame if you notice a scent. If this is not the case, the germs are already in your drain.

The good news is a $1 bottle of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide solution will eradicate the fungus. Using baking soda 20 minutes later will help eliminate the stench. Of course, you can also call a plumber to disinfect your water heater. And contact your water provider if your hot and cold water both smell.

9 – Bad Tasting Tap Water

The pipes in your home may be leaking iron or copper, which can cause your water to taste metallic. Also, you may have overdosed on disinfection or that the correct dosage reacts with organic stuff (like bacteria) in your plumbing system if you taste chlorine in your water.

If you see high chlorine levels or metals in your water, contact your water provider. They can do some testing on your well or your city water. You may need to flush your system or call a plumber if the taste disappears after a few minutes of running the water or if only one tap has excessive chlorine concentrations.

If you have bad-tasting tap water, a $150 to $200 water purifier may be the best option if the problem persists. In addition, high-quality activated carbon filters may remove heavy metals, bacteria, and other contaminants from the solution. Finally, a refreshing beverage and good smelling produce!

10 – Banging Water Pipes

Banging water pipes or “water hammer” can result from the hydraulic shock that causes your water supply to slam and jerk against other pipes. Or it can slam against the wood framing in your walls and floors when you turn off your water. This loud banging can cause much distress to you and keep you up at night, affecting your health.

Fortunately, you can fix or reduce the noise by insulating around the pipes. You can also try reducing the water pressure at the site of the meter. You can also install a water hammer arrestor to help solve this loud annoying home quirk.

We hope these tips can help you with your home quirks and finally rid your home of these annoyances with ease.
