If you always wanted to learn more about wine, the internet provides a lot of great information. The problem is it’s confusing as to where to make a start. In fact, it’s a learning process that takes time, patience, and knowledge beforehand to make a start.  Don’t let that scare you off. The rewards for learning about wine for beginners can be enjoyable and help better your social skills too! You can network with other wine lovers and learn from them as well.

Previously, I knew nothing about wine and still am on my learning curve. The only thing I knew about was how to remove a wine stain from my sofa. As the years passed, and with my husband’s help, I started reaching out to learn more about wine for beginners. Every day, I discover something new about the wonderful journey of wine appreciation, and so can you.

How To Sip & Snif Wine Properly

First, an excellent place to start is to learn how to sip wine properly from a wine glass. Start with some of your favorite wine glasses. Personally, we love Riedel Wine Glasses for our Cabernet Sauvignon. They have an excellent reputation and known worldwide.

With your wine glasses in place, place a small amount in the glass and start to rotate around the glass and swish. You want the wine to swirl around the glass, gently touching the sides. You’ll discover this helps to enhance the aroma of the wine.

Doing so allows you to experience the wine’s full body and see how the wine reacts. Of course, you’ll want to experience the full aroma of the wine as well. While you might not understand what you smell or see, it’s a great place to start with wine for beginners.

Start To Ask Yourself Some Questions

Furthermore, you can begin to ask yourself questions about the wine. For example, did I smell the grapes, or was it fruity? Did the wine seem full-bodied or less fluid in motion? Next, you can take a small sip of the wine and give your palette a changed to learn to associate the aroma with taste.

After that, once you move forward in your wine tasting experience, you can develop your ability to isolate certain flavors. Your nose plays a crucial role in your wine for beginners journey. Actually, sniffing wine became one of my favorite things to do when my journey started. More importantly, you’ll want to read as much as you can about wine for beginners as well. The more you know, the more you appreciate it.

Typically, it takes me about three to five repetitions to differentiate a specific wine and recognize it. It may take you more or less depending on your ability to associate and remember a wine name with a taste. As a wine enthusiast, you’ll learn just how essential a role your nose plays in wine tasting.

Wine For Beginners Basic Facts You Should Know About – Pairing & Chilling Wines

When it comes to pairing your wines with food, it’s always good to know what pairs best with certain foods. I learned about the red wine/meat, white wine /fish rule and discovered quickly to forget that rule. While some prefer sticking to it, you’ll find you can drink any wine you choose. In other words, drink what you like with what you want and don’t worry about that rule.

From a biochemical point of view, wine is a beverage in limbo between a juice and vinegar beverage. Finished wine is not a stable medium as it’s changing states and can turn rancid. Most red wines are best at room temperature.

Moreover, once you open a bottle, let it sit a bit before serving. You can chill white, rose, and sparkling wines before serving at 45-50 degrees (about two hours in a refrigerator).  Cold temperatures significantly delay oxidation reactions, but open wine bottles will change in your refrigerator.

In my opinion, we stow our wine in one of the best wine coolers we discovered. By doing so, your wine will remain at the perfect temperature all the time. Always store your wine in a cool, dark, and undisturbed place. Purchasing a wine cooler was one of the best things we did when learning about wine for beginners.

A Chic And Effective Solution For Storing Your Wine

Some people are allergic to wine. Usually, the allergen is to the sulfites in the wine. Sulfites can trigger severe asthmatic symptoms in some people. Wineries add sulfites to wine to act as a preservation method. More so, they preserve freshness and protect the wine from oxidation and unwanted bacteria.

Some older wines, especially red wines, may have some sediment in them. My husband has a terrible allergic reaction after drinking wine with sulfites. These sulfites cause him to sneeze for hours after he drinks wine. Since he loves wine so much, we needed to figure out a satisfactory resolution.

Additionally, we found wine tastes better upon filtering before you drink it. I recommend learning about filtering wine and removing sulfites with the best equipment. If you suffer from allergic reactions to sulfites, you might want to learn more about it.

Some sites state the best time for drinking wine is eleven to one o’clock in the day because your mouth is drier, and you have less saliva that can alter the taste of the wine. Laughingly called “wine o’clock,” and you can find it in Webster’s dictionary. Since your journey for Wine For Beginners just started, you can decide for yourself which times you prefer.

Also, some studies show drinking a glass of wine a day is good for your health. According to the Harvard school of public health, you can drink one glass of 5 oz. glass of wine safely ( 12 ounces for beer and 1.5 ounces for liquor). Each delivers about 12-14 grams of alcohol on the average

Gut Health & Wine

Recently, there’s a lot of discussion about gut health and drinking wine. Your gut can affect the state of your digestion, organs, and even mental health. Of course, gut microbiota is an essential part of the human cell and interacts with virtually all human cells.

The American Gastroenterology Journal research reveals that red wine intake, done in moderation, benefits your overall gut.  Additionally, this is due to the link between antimicrobials and polyphenols found in wine. Red wine contains many polyphenols,  a natural chemical that has antimicrobial properties. Antimicrobials age agents help to balance out the natural microbiome of the gut.

Researchers from Ben Gurion University in the Negev in Israel studied the effect of red wine in moderation. They found it positively affected the good heart-protective HDL cholesterol in the subjects. They also found that red wine drinkers had significantly increased their levels of good HDL cholesterol and had a more beneficial cholesterol ratio compared to the group that just drank water.

Wine’s Health Benefits

People who drank either red wine or white wine reported better sleep quality than the group that drank just water. A recent Time magazine article quoted Dr. James O’Keefe, chief of preventative cardiology at St. Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute in Kansas City. He stated, “It seems to me that my patients who drink red wine in moderation tend to do better—red wine, which has resveratrol levels 13 fold higher than white wine.

Resveratrol, part of a compound called polyphenols, can be beneficial to our bodies. They act like antioxidants protecting the body against damage that can put a person at a higher risk for cancer or heart disease. Resveratrol, known to protect blood vessels,  may prevent blood clots. And decrease bad cholesterol (LDL) while increasing good cholesterol (HDL).

O’Keefe’s recommendation was to drink one 5 ounce glass of red wine with your biggest meal. And preferably, eating a Mediterranean diet high in vegetables and fish, lower in red meat, fruit for dessert, and olive oil.  He emphasized, “the key here is moderation.”

Red or White Wine?

Studies show white wine can improve heart health and prevent heart disease. However, red wine has more powerful antioxidants. White wine, on average, has fewer calories than red. Red wine contains higher silicon levels than white wines, which may increase the density of bones and reduce the chances of osteoporosis.

As follows, some of the best red wines for beginners you might like: Garnacha from Spain, Zinfandel from California, Shiraz (also known as Syrah), Monastrell from Spain, Petite Sirah from California, and Carmenere from Chile.  Some of the best white wines to start with are Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Riesling, and Moscato.
