New York City Egg Cream Recipe Authentic Brooklyn Style
Growing up in Brooklyn has taught me many things, and one of my favorite memories is drinking an old-fashion New York City Egg Cream!
Your family will love this beverage too! It’s only got three ingredients and so easy to make. I was surprised to learn how many folks don’t know about this delicious drink!
One of the drinks that often was slid across the counter of these old-time soda fountains was the chocolate egg cream and it was one of the Big Apple’s most nostalgic beverages. What a treat for sure!
The origin of the name “egg cream” is a subject of debate. One theory is that grade “A” milk was used in its creation, leading to the name “a chocolate A cream”, thus sounding like ‘egg’ cream. Stanley Auster, the grandson of the beverage’s alleged inventor, has been quoted as saying that the origins of the name are lost in time.
Now, you can enjoy this iconic drink at home! Once you’ve had one, there’s no turning back :) I hope you get to enjoy my New York City Egg Cream Recipe Authentic Brooklyn Style!
All you need to do is watch my video walking you through the process. I promise you, it’s quick and delicious!
Video – New York City Egg Cream Recipe
Preparation:
Pour about 1/4 of a glass of chocolate syrup into a glass.
Add about 1 inch of cold milk – at this point, you’ll want to start stirring the mix together so it’s blended.
Add seltzer or club soda to within 1 inch of the top of the glass; stir vigorously with a long spoon (this will cause it to become white and bubbly with a good head of foam). ;
Briskly stir with a long spoon only at the bottom of the glass where the chocolate sits (see my video for instructions). The drink should have a dark brown bottom and a 1-inch high pure white foam top. Don’t over mix either that can make the foam disappear!
NOTE: Drink Immediately! Do not let the prepared Egg Cream sit for a long period of time – 3 minutes or more as it will go flat.
Makes 1 serving.

We used to make a similar drink, called a Brown Cow. We would pour about two thirds of a glass of coke and then add ice cream and give it a quick stir. It would all bubble up and tasted delicious!
