Greta Garbo – Her Private Life

There’s a lot to know about the life of Greta Garbo. She lived a melancholy and somber persona. Unfortunately, at age 35, she gave up on Hollywood altogether and refused opportunities to return to the screen. Nevertheless, her acting portrayed tragic characters, and understated performances were some of her best work.

For example, her portrayal of a consumptive courtesan in 1936’s Camille her best work, attributed to her fame. Nominated for three Academy Awards, she also received an honorary Academy Award in 1954. On the other hand, Greta Garbo led a private life and shunned publicity. Yet, interestingly, she amassed an art collection auctioned for millions when she died.

Known for walking the streets of New York in a trench coat and sunglasses, she inspired the sport of “Garbo Watching” for celebrity photographers and curious admirers. Although sadly, her claim to fame is a quote, “I want to be alone,” created more of a mystery around her persona. You can watch the short clip below, which exemplifies her tragic persona.

Garbo’s Apartment On Manhattan’s East Side

Garbo’s apartment gave her the peace she wanted during her long retirement. But unfortunately, this plush apartment is back on the market for $7.25 million. In 2017, it sold for $8.5 million after a fierce bidding war. When you see the decor of each room, you can almost feel her presence.

Other celebrities also called the exclusive building at the end of 52nd street in Manhattan home. And they include Ethel Barrymore, Rex Harrison, and members of the billionaire Rothschild and Heinz families. You can see why Greta Garbo loved the area as she did.

Surprisingly, the home retains many of Garbo’s furnishings and personal touches. But it includes a newly renovated kitchen, dining room, bathrooms, and HVAC system. In addition, the three-bedroom, three-bath apartment boasts large picture windows with spectacular views of the East River. This magnificent view reminded Greta Garbo of her native Stockholm.

More Apartment Details

Impressively, the massive kitchen connects to a formal dining room. And it includes a Miele side-by-side refrigerator/freezer, a Thermador five-burner stove with griddle and oven, and a custom maple-top center island. I want to think Greta Garbo would approve of the apartment’s improvements.

Wood-paneled walls adorn the living room, Garbo’s favorite space, include a gas fireplace and an attached den. French doors at the far end open to a lovely balcony cooled by river breezes.

You can still see the style and flair of Greta Garbo throughout the apartment. For instance, the delicate primary bedroom suite features Garbo’s beloved rose-hued Fortuny silk walls and headboard decor. And the second bedroom includes a pink-and-green-accented V’Soske rug designed by the movie star.

You can easily walk around the city’s hot spots directly beside the East River. The skyline features iconic skyscrapers, including the Empire State Building and the art deco Chrysler Building. We can picture Greta Garbo walking around the city, soaking up the view in our mind’s eye.

In addition, mid-Town East is home to Madison Avenue’s advertising giants, the architectural destination of Grand Central Terminal, and the luxury shops on 5th Avenue. Centrally located, it is easily accessible to everything Manhattan has to offer.

In closing, it’s easy to see why Greta Garbo loved this apartment and its perfect location in NYC. Her legacy still lives on, and she still holds much adoration from her fans, both old and new.
