14 Flooring Ideas You Need To Think About For Your Home
For the past few months, we’ve been checking into flooring ideas for our bedrooms. It’s so important to do the research and know what your options are first.
Choosing the right flooring for your home can be a difficult decision to make because there are many different styles and materials to choose from. Regardless of your budget, there’s the right flooring option for you out there.
We need new flooring for our three bedrooms. For that past few months, we’ve investigated some flooring ideas in the efforts to finally decide!
To make things easier, we are sharing what we’ve learned in our research with you!
Flooring Ideas
1- Choosing Something Practical
When it comes to replacing or adding new flooring, you will need to make sure you choose something that is practical and that will match the color palette for your home.
If you are not into coordinating colors in your home, that’s fine too! Remember, at the end of the day it’s all about your style and comfort level.
For example, if you have children or if you have any animals, carpets all over the house might not be the best decision to make, especially if it is light in color. Remember, carpets are hard to keep clean and are not as easy to remove dirt and stains from.
Side note: I discovered one of the best carpet cleaners ever! It’s called Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning Solution Spot & Stain Remover Spray and it’s sold on Amazon. It’s literally the best stain remover ever, and the only one I’ll ever use!
My daughter got grease stains on one of my bedroom custom Levolor blinds, and it would not come out – until I used the spot and stain remover on it that is! It worked like magic! Finally, there’s a product that didn’t damage the fabric and worked 100% at removing the stain.
It works great on any stain you have in your home too. I would be remiss if I left this awesome product out of this article on flooring ideas.
2 – Carpets
Of course, carpeting is one of the most popular options. This is because they can be comfortable to walk on and can keep your home warmer. There are many different styles of carpets and many colors to choose from which means you can find a perfect match to the overall color theme to your home.
Personally, I love decorating with area rugs too. There’s so much you can do with them and you can always find a great sale especially on Amazon.
Although you may want to get carpets, it is important to remember that they can be difficult to keep clean especially if they are lighter. If you don’t have a carpet cleaner to hand you will have to find out other ways to clean your carpets.
There are both pros and cons to installing carpeting in your home although, it’s one of the most popular flooring ideas.
Pros:
- Carpeting is always so soft and warm on your feet and pleasant to walk on.
- It’s very flexible too. You can choose from a casual look or a formal one depending on the type you choose.
- It’s available in a wide variety of texture and styles. And designed to fit perfectly into your lifestyle.
Cons:
- The most obvious con first – stains are not always a nuisance to clean especially if you have small children.
- Carpeting stretches over the years and causes ripples and bumps. The seams can show as well if not properly installed.
- Choosing any carpeting with patterns can be a problem as well. Pattern wears tend to happen and become unsightly as well.
3 – Tiles
We all love tiles! Tiles are easy to clean and harder to damage or stain. They are also perfect for any kitchen or bathroom and entryway too. Depending on your budget, you can find a wide range of tiles too.
Be sure to hire a skilled installer so you get that perfect fit too. Tiled floors are also great because you spill water on them it won’t damage the floorboards. There are many different types of tiles to choose from which means they are suitable for any theme and any color you choose for your home.
If you decide you would like a bit of variety in the color of your tile and would like a mix of color in some areas, you should consider custom mosaic tile to be fitted. If you would like to see the different styles you can find some gorgeous mosaic tiles at Unique Building Concepts who also take custom requests.
4 – Wooden Flooring
Wooden flooring is great because there are many different colors and designs to choose from. Wood flooring is also a popular option to choose because it can be cleaned a lot easier than carpets.
In our townhouse, we have wood flooring throughout of home with the exception of the three bedrooms. I totally regret not using wood flooring throughout my entire home. Adding more wood flooring is one of my first options for improving our home.
Wood flooring can be expensive to install so be sure and get estimates beforehand.
5 – Laminate Floors
When you have laminate, you can choose from many different options, for example, you can find laminate flooring that looks like wood flooring and tile. Laminate is also very easy to keep clean and is practical to pay all over you’re your home.
Laminate flooring is easy to clean, and you can find it to be less expensive than wood flooring as well. One of the drawbacks of installing laminate is if you damage it, it must be replaced. There’s no fixing it.
6 – Vinyl Flooring
I think most of us can say at some point, we’ve had vinyl flooring installed in our homes. It’s wildly popular and very cost effective as well. Vinyl flooring is very practical and is available in a wide array of colors and patterns.
There is a con for installing it though – it can easily dent. If you have pets, this might not be a good option for you. Dogs and cats love digging their nails into vinyl flooring and once it’s damaged, you can replace a piece but it never looks the same. With that said, vinyl flooring does come in a peel and stick format so it might be much easier to use instead of an entire roll of vinyl flooring.
I do love the patterns and colors vinyl flooring comes in that’s for sure. It’s really evolved since I was a kid!
7 – Cork Flooring
Oh my gosh, my heart be still! I love cork flooring – do you? There’s something so unique about it and it does have a lot of great benefits too. It’s a great insulator and will keep your tootsies nice and warm all winter long.
Did you know that cork flooring is more mold resistant and antimicrobial in nature too? For those of us germaphobes this a great option.
It’s also more environmentally friendly and absorbs sounds more effectively too. And as with any flooring, you have to make sure to follow the guidelines for cork flooring.
Don’t leave standing water for long periods of times and direct sun can affect the color and cause discoloration over time.
8 – Rubber Flooring
Yes, rubber flooring is a thing! It’s becoming more widely used over the past few years too. Like cork flooring, rubber flooring is great for absorbing sound and I think, it’s pretty rad looking too!
These interlocking floor tiles feature a stylish pattern and are a simple, cost-effective way to create or enhance an indoor or outdoor space. They are perfect for the patio, deck, walkways, gazebo, garage, or on any hard surface.
It’s also good for your joints too and can be a great option for those of us who love to work out. We are thinking about using rubber flooring for the garage floor area too. Every time we paint the garage floor, a few years later, it starts looking worn and starts to peel. What a great option!
10 – Penny Flooring
The whole penny flooring thing started a few years ago. I first saw it on Pinterest and became widely popular very fast. To say the least, penny flooring is very unique and does create a solid flooring option to think about.
There are loads of tutorials out there on how to create one so be sure to keep it in mind when thinking about flooring ideas.
11 & 12 – Concrete and Paper Flooring
Another huge flooring ideas trend is the paper flooring method. Personally, it’s not for my style but it’s a cost-effective and fun way to remodel your floors. Another Pinterest fad, paper flooring hit the mark and was pinned over and over again.
Like penny flooring, there are lots of Paper Bag Flooring DIY tutorials out there if you are interested.
The blog Domestic Imperfection has a great tutorial on paper floors. You can see below how awesome her paper floor looks one year later.
Concrete flooring can be a viable option for you as well. It’s sturdy, will last for years and years and is a unique look for sure. You can create them in a wide array of colors too.
It’s a low maintenance option and you can create beautiful designs with concrete too.
13 – Foam Flooring
I never heard of installing foam flooring before until I started researching flooring ideas the past few months. I think they make a great option as well. These interlocking foam mats are made from the highest quality premium foam. You can decorate your hard floor without compromising on quality, comfort, or style.
These floor tiles fit together snugly, just like a puzzle and can easily be installed as a DIY project. They are very versatile in use and you can decorate bedrooms, the playroom, living room, basement, garage, or gym with them. They are a good choice and an economical solution for creating temporary or permanent flooring. Foam flooring is thick, durable, non-slip, easy to clean, and stays in place.
They are also available in a wide array of colors and patterns too!
14 – Faux Brick Flooring
I love how faux brink flooring looks! I also love it for decorating walls too. There are many ways to achieve this look too. It can be a great and expensive way to solve your flooring dilemma! I love it on a kitchen floor as featured below on sale from Wayfair.
You can use scrap wood to achieve this look or purchase faux brick flooring tile too. Faux brick flooring looks so chic and can fit perfectly into any decor your home might have.
I think I covered lots of ways for you to think about for flooring ideas but if you do the research, you’ll find plenty more. The options become a lot more niche-oriented once you cycle past the major options.
Overall, it can be difficult to choose the right type of flooring for your home but, with a wide array of options, I know you’ll find something you love!
