Transform Your Stairs With A Decorative Runner
Transform Your Stairs With A Decorative Runner
You can do something to transform your stairs and it doesn’t have to cost a fortune. We’ve lived in this house for 10 years now, and I’ve always wanted to get these stairs carpeted. Finally, it happened! I know it’s not a huge deal, but I we’ve always had something more pressing to do, and the stairs were always put last on that list.
What motivated me? Well, I read an article on how much safer it is to have them carpeted – and that’s what did it! Even the installer mentioned that fact while installing the carpet. I guess if you take a flop, it makes a lot more sense to have a cushion under your butt!
I initially chose this carpet, and it was way over budget. It’s a beauty, but very expensive.

Here is how that would have looked – well, just the stairs not the rest of the room. :) It was truly an elegant carpet – all wool from Australia I believe. I adored the star pattern.
After reality hitting me, I chose this instead. It was a lot more affordable, and I thought it looked pretty elegant.
As you can see, it does have some blue in it. It’s a mixture of a slate blue and brown. The blue is not too overpowering which suited me fine. I wanted that little pop of color to brighten the stairway.
My installer below! He was always smiling and did a fine job!
I had to think about positioning – which surprised me. The reason was that the bottom steps are wider and get smaller seven steps up. I would have thought the installer would have a standard way of installing carpets on stairs, but actually, you are given a choice of how you want them positioned.
I chose to have them centered. I know the eye likes symmetry, and I wanted to be sure both sizes going up were centered. I’m happy with the results. Plus, there is so much cushioning now – what an amazing difference going up and down. It even feels safer.
Well, that’s one more project I can mark off my list! Thanks for reading – have a great day!

Thanks for the tips on carpeting a staircase. I wonder where the curved wainscot in the first picture was purchased. The only one I could find was made of vinyl. Interesting, but not as authentic-looking as the one is this first picture. Also, what was your source for “cut stringers”? I am in VA.
Thanks!

Hi Beverly, Oh, I love that too. It’s simply stunning and I wondered how they did that. The photo I believe is from the website Houzz. Recently, I added rubber-like moldings to a piece of furniture and I bet you can use them on walls too. Here’s the post https://sassytownhouseliving.com/add-beautiful-bendable-furniture-moldings-decor/
The cut stringers I googled and read as much as I could about them. It’s so nice to be able to do something different when it comes to decorating stairs. I loved working on this project, it was much fun. Thanks much for stopping by and I hope to see you again soon.
Happy New Year!
