1 – Develop A Solid Plan

Typically, there’s no emergency when you paint your home unless your home experienced a natural disaster. That is why it is easy to plan and know exactly how to paint your walls. Indeed, it would be best to keep in mind that painting the walls does not mean only painting them. More importantly, painting your home affects everything and impacts your day-to-day life in many ways.

Of course, before starting this project, you will have to empty the room contents to avoid paint spillage. You will also need the necessary supplies and some assistance, if possible unless you are an experienced painter. An important benefit of planning is that you will be able to set time aside for this job. Concentrate on the task, and your wall painting project will take less time without distractions from other activities.

One of the first things we did was choose paint colors we love. Then, take one room at a time and make sure you purchase paint samples for each room. Small paint can samples only cost about $5 a can and are a great way to make sure you love the chosen colors. Make sure you apply at least two coats of the paint samples so you can fully appreciate them.

2 – Choose The Right Season To Paint Your Home

When it comes to painting your home, you’ll want to choose the perfect season. First, of course, you want to avoid painting your home during the winter or rainy season. Instead, the best season to paint your home is during dry, cool weather. Also, avoid painting when it’s humid outside, as this slows down the drying process and may cause your paint to drip.

In addition, if you must paint during these offtimes or when it’s raining, take your time. You’ll want to allow the paint to dry fully and not rush. Also, make sure you include the painting schedule in your original plan so there’s no confusion.

3  – Before You Start Painting, Inspect The Walls And Ceiling

Before you start painting, inspect all the walls and ceilings. Any cracks, peeled areas, or flaking areas will need scrapping and sanding before painting the walls. Otherwise, the weight of the new paint will easily pull the old paint off. Of course, when you paint your home, you want the wall clean and scar-free. In some cases, you may also need to wash the oily/greasy spots with detergent, followed by a rinse with water.

More so, the important thing is always to make sure the walls are dry and free of any residual power before painting your home. You can use a very popular product called Zep Wall Cleaning Wipes (#ad) to spot clean them. These wipes make it easy to clean any grease or marks on your walls before painting. And you can use them on your walls, ceilings, woodwork, painted surfaces, vinyl coverings, and washable wallpaper.

4 – Gather Your Supplies Beforehand

More so, if you want to do a good job, you need to get the right type of supplies.  And you’ll need more than a bucket of paint and a brush. With over 38,000 5-star reviews, these Pro Grade Assorted Paint Brushes (#ad) will help you complete any paint job perfectly. Also, you’ll need a good paint roller, roller covers, and some inexpensive painter’s tape (#ad).  It is good to avoid skimping on these supplies, either. You’ll want to make sure you have sturdy, reliable supplies when you paint your home.

In addition, you’ll want to purchase drop cloths, painter’s gloves, eye shields, an edge painting cutter, and a few extra paint roller covers. Conversely, you can buy this Topec 31 Piece House Paint Roller Kit (#ad), which includes everything you need! After all, you don’t want to have to run to your local home store to buy them in the middle of the job.

For instance, a flimsy brush will see its fibers on the brush end up on the wall. There’s nothing more annoying than cleaning left behind fibers from your freshly painted wall. So it’s a big project which you prepare in advance. And this planning should include setting aside some money to buy good-quality supplies. And this will help you do the job right the first time.

5 – Practice Before The Real Deal

In addition, if you have never painted before, you might want to take some time and practice. You can start by practicing on a piece of cardboard or your wall with the sample paint cans. Practicing is a good way to learn how to use a paint roller properly. Of course, the goal is to paint evenly and not leave any paint marks behind.

You also need to know when and where to use the roller or the paintbrush. Again, a little practice session can go a long way in making you comfortable holding the brush and learning how to do it right when you get to the actual walls. Remember, practice makes perfect, especially when it’s time to paint your home.

6 – Properly Protect Your Valuables

The first rule of painting is to cover what you do not want a painted mess left behind on your valuable. More so, this means your furniture, floors, and other hardware. Also, be sure to place drop cloths and secure them. To protect the doorknobs, use plastic sandwich bags and secure them properly with painter’s tape. Also, always remove the outlet covers and light switches. By using this technique, you can avoid any damage to your home.

7 – Use Paint Primer When You Paint Your Home

There’s a lot of debate about whether or not to use a primer on your walls. And since many paint companies make paint with primer in them, even more so. If your walls didn’t see a coat of paint in decades, it might be a good idea to use a good primer beforehand.

Furthermore, you can speak to a professional at the paint shop and buy a bonding primer. The right primer will cover all the flaws and make your work look professional. But, please, don’t worry if you don’t know much about this. Your local paint store should be able to guide you in the right direction. Or you can trust reader reviews about which is the best paint primer (#ad) to use.

8 – Be Consistent When You Paint Your Home

No one will argue the fact that consistency is very important during a paint job. However, this does not refer to consistency in the way you paint (although that is also important). It essentially refers to the consistency of your paint.

How Do You Remain Consistent? With These Tips:

Combine all the paint of one color that you will need and pour it into one large container. Mix it thoroughly, and this will ensure that the color will remain consistent throughout the painting process.

Also, you’ll want to paint from top to bottom. You can do this after you cut in the edges of the ceiling and baseboards. It’s best to paint your mistakes away from top to bottom and avoid creating more mess. Also, once your paint starts to dry, leave it alone! Please don’t go back over your painting once you see it drying. This way, you can avoid making marks and color streaks.

9 – Use A Good Paint Roller And Let It Do The Work For You

While we love our paintbrushes for delicate areas, the paint roller kicks butt when doing the job correctly. More so, you do not need to apply excessive pressure, and there are excellent paint rollers with extensions available that can help you reach the ceiling and high walls.

It is always a good idea to start painting from the top first. Then, once you paint the edges with a brush, you can begin painting the ceiling with a roller. Plus, this will help you avoid splatters and telltale drips.
