6 Good Habits For Happy, Healthy, And Hydrated Hair

6 Good Habits For Happy, Healthy, And Hydrated Hair - Sassy Townhouse Living

They say our hair is our crowning glory. Don’t you think it deserves some extra attention? Check out the habits that keep my hair beautiful. You don’t have to walk around with damaged hair. I’ve discovered that it’s essential to develop good hair care habits in order to keep your hair looking the way it deserves to look. There’s no reason to have to settle for damaged hair and there is a way out from under it. I’m sure you’ve heard someone say, “Oh, don’t worry. It grows back”. While that’s true, waiting up to a year or more for damaged hair to grow back can be a devastating and painful wait. And, if you have long hair it can take up to three years!

We take care of our skin making sure we stick to our healthy routines for our makeup and skincare products yet when it comes to developing the same good habits for our hair, many of us fall short. You can have the hair you desire simply by developing a good hair care routine and sticking to it.

As a former cosmetologist, I’ve learned a lot of hair and what needs to be done to keep it in great shape. I still make sure I read up on the latest and greatest for keeping our locks in optimum shape and I’ve discovered that there are tried and true habits that do work. That’s why I thought I’d share with you what works for me and why it’s never too late to get started.

1 – Should You Wash Your Hair Daily? I’ve read so many debates on this topic. I believe when it comes down to it, it’s all about personal preference. Washing your hair every day does not damage your hair. Even the folks over at WebMD agree with me in stating that, “Experts say there’s no single answer to how often people should shampoo. You may not need to do it as often as you think. It usually comes down to personal preference. For guidance, take a look at your hair type and styling choices.”  And this is the exact truth.

If you strip your hair with bleach and intense coloring procedures, you might not want to wash it every day. You really need to look at your own situation and make a determination based on how you are treating your hair to begin with. I don’t color my hair – yet – so I wash my hair daily. That routine has worked for me personally and my hair stays happy and healthy all year-long. So, you make that determination for yourself.

2 – Conditioning Your Hair – Having too much of a good thing (i.e conditioner or protein) can actually start damaging your locks and cause limp and greasy hair. If you have unprocessed hair, be careful with your conditioner. I literally use a pea-sized amount and only condition the ends of my hair. Then, I run what’s left on my hands and run that through my hair and quickly rinse it off two to three times. This method has transformed my hair. It’s full of body and shine and it’s all due to NOT over-conditioning it. When you over-condition your hair, the strands feel and appear stringy and lack what we desire most – volume! You can tell when you’ve over-conditioned when your hair feels too soft and limp. It can also feel heavy and oily. This makes your hair hard to style too.

You can experience these effects from the wrong conditioner too. If you have medium to thicker hair, use a light daily conditioner with natural hydrating products like almond oils, shea butter, coconut and macadamia oils, and keratin proteins. If your hair is already over-conditioned, give it a good rinse with a clarifying shampoo to remove some of that residue. If your hair is on the dry side, apply a leave-in conditioner after you get out of the shower and before you style your hair. They really do work! I’ll cover hair care products below so be sure to continue reading!

3 – Regular Haircuts – It might seem like a simple enough habit to get into but you’d be surprised to discover how many people actually get haircuts every six to eight weeks. All the experts agree that avoiding the salon is counterproductive to maintaining healthy hair. It also hinders the growth of your hair too so if you are looking to grow your locks be sure to get frequent cuts. The ends of your hair will dry and split as well if you’re not trimming them off. It’s a simple habit to get into and if you book several appointments in a row, you’re more apt to keep the appointments.

4 – Taking Care Of Your Scalp – Having a healthy scalp is essential to maintaining beautiful healthy hair. Be sure to use shampoos that do not contain sulfates or parabens. Sulfates are the chemicals that make shampoos lather up. Parabens are preservatives that cause irritation and eye problems after prolonged use. Both of these chemicals aren’t good for your hair so be careful about the products you are buying. Don’t over-brush your hair. Contrary to what you’ve been told, brushing your hair stimulates the follicles which foster growth and brushing too much too often will cause damage to your hair strands that result in frizz and split ends.

5 – Eating A Lot Of Protein – Protein is the building block of hair because hair is keratinized protein. Hair is considered a non-essential tissue, so the body doesn’t send protein to hair follicles first but instead, it focuses on our essential organs like the heart or liver. If you’re eating enough of the right foods, the body will be able to distribute protein everywhere it’s needed. Iron is another essential nutrient your body needs. It’s an energy source for the hair and it’s a mineral that the hair needs to be healthy. In fact, iron deficiency has been linked to female patterned hair loss. Even if you are a vegetarian, you can still find ways to eats a lot of protein.

6 – Avoid Hot Hairstyling Tools! Yikes! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen women use flat irons and curling irons with the heat setting set to the inner core of the sun! Your hair will sizzle and fry right off your head so be very careful with these tools. If you plan to curl or straighten, be sure to use a protective spray beforehand. It can save your hair and make all the difference in the world to your locks.

One key factor in keeping my hair healthy is directly correlated with the products I use. I find they make a huge difference in the overall quality and texture of my hair. And while it’s true, I do not have color-treated hair, my hair still suffers from the effects of the elements and everything I’ve mentioned above. I’ve discovered a company called Hask and their products astound me every time I use them.

  1. I’ve been using your tip to not over condition my hair with not using as much and concentrating on the ends for awhile now and it makes a difference in my hair. I am amazed with Hask and how many great products they have too.

  2. Wow. This is quite a comprehensive post on hair and I learned more than I thought I could. I have been getting haircuts every 6 to 8 weeks for a while, sometimes every 4 weeks. It makes a difference. The sulfates and paraben thing could be causing scalp irritation, although I thought it might be the dye. I shall switch up shampoos and see what happens.

  3. Wow, my hair hasn’t been that shiny and smooth in a long time. I definitely need to try this after too much coloring, blowdrying and straightening.

  4. Your hair looks lovely. I’m obsessed with my hair, and try to maintain its condition and bounce. I’ve tried lots of products over the years and find that a volumizing root spray works well and a bit of conditioner (like you said, I don’t over condition).

  5. This collection of advice couldn’t be more thorough or useful. And you’ve inspired me to schedule a visit to my hair cutter + colorist. (I always wait longer between visits than I should.) My sister and I are always looking for paraben-free products, but I have yet to find anything that I really love. I’m going to try Hask.

  6. Hi Roz. I’m so glad the post inspired you! Getting hair cuts makes a world of difference in our hair. I love Hask haircare. My hair never felt or looked better. It’s always exciting to find products that actually work. Thanks much and have a great rest of the week!

  12. HI Darlene, thanks for stopping by! Hask has a huge line or products that you can get at Ulta. I know they have a good volumizing shampoo that I used and liked. If you look at my posts under hairstyles, you will find some excellent products devoted to restoring thinning hair. I hope that helps. Let me know if you have any questions about them.
