How To Restore Life Back To Old Furniture You Love
How To Restore Life Back To Old Furniture You Love!
We all have pieces of old furniture we love and cherish and once they lose their luster, there’s a sure-fire way to restore it back! If you have furniture that needs restoring there’s never been an easier way to do it.
We all have pieces we love – maybe they need a drastic change, maybe a subtle one – I know one thing for sure, folks are not so readily discarding their furniture anymore. With the high prices of replacement these days, it’s much more efficient to upcycle them. I had some terrific successes restoring some pieces in my home and my love for these older pieces has grown because I took the time to restore or transform them.
About six years or so ago, I purchased a beautiful cabinet for our upstairs foyer. It sat in the middle of a high traffic area and took a beating over the years resulting in dings, nicks, and worn areas. That’s when I decided to try to restore it while keeping some of the main elements that I fell in love with.
Here’s a picture of the before. I love the decorative elements in this cabinet and decided to keep them while restoring the damages. There were loads of imperfections that were highly visible and upset me every time I’d walked past it.
Firstly, I knew I had to get the best premium paint that would have great coverage so I didn’t have to do any prep work. Yep, no prepping involved. Isn’t that awesome? I knew CeCe Caldwells paints would fit the bill perfectly because I already transformed my dresser with their products, and I knew the quality would be exactly what I needed for this piece as well. The folks over at CeCe Caldwells were kind enough to sponsor this post by supplying the paints, and for that, I am very thankful.
I chose Texas Tea and Myrtle Beach Sand for my colors. I wanted to try to keep pretty close to the original overall theme of the cabinet. Every one of their colors is rich, vibrant, and covers like nothing on the market that I’ve ever used – and I’ve used many.
I also used a Metallic Wax in Bauxite Beige to finish up with and provide protection and a beautiful finish to this cabinet. It’s a champagne colored metallic wax that adds a subtle glow to your finished project. It applied perfectly and gave me the exact finish I was looking for.
Another point worth mentioning, I love how CeCe Caldwells paints have plastic lids. It makes popping them off and putting them back on so easy!
I love their mission statement.

Now, to my restoration!
While this piece was perfect for my foyer, the damages were clearly visible.
I didn’t do any prep work at all. The paint covered up all the dings, nicks, and imperfections perfectly. I wanted to keep some of these elements visible to add to the overall look of this cabinet.
I made sure to follow the lines of what I wanted to remain untouched while covering up all the problem areas.
Below, you can see how the wax added a beautiful subtle glow to the paint which is exactly the look I was going for. The cabinet had a lot of texture before I painted it, and I wanted to bring that back into the piece. Using the wax was the perfect way to achieve the look I desired. You can see the difference clearly in the image below.
I decided to keep the original hardware as well. Keeping this piece as close to the original design was important while still being able to brighten and restore it.
I love how adding Myrtle Beach Sand to the trim created a brightened focal point in the piece.
Completely renewed, I’m really enjoying this transformation. My hubby said it’s my best work to date! That means so much to me.
One of the reasons I love this cabinet in my foyer is because of the atmosphere it gives off in the evening. I love lighting the candles and lamp. It creates a warm and cozy environment.
I was able to keep the elements I love while covering the damage and brightening the entire space – all with the help of CeCe Cadwells’ paint! I think the before and after picture is astounding!

Yup, hubby is right…. well from this side of the keyboard anyway ;-) I love the look, those gorgeous inserts aren’t competing with the rest of the cabinet any more. You did a stunning job Carolann and I love the way the it looks with the lights on, so subtle yet still noticable
