Years ago, diagnosed with a neurological condition called Guillain Barre syndrome, I felt lost, confused, and scared. While most experience recovery, many experience long-term symptoms, and effects. Upon sight, you can’t see my disability, but unfortunately, I live with the impact daily.
After recovering, I knew I would have a certain amount of limitations, and it was best to be realistic about the after-effects. Once you accept the limits of your disability, you can begin to heal and move forward. And that’s what I did exactly. Over time, I did regain my strength and began leading a relatively healthy life.
However, it’s key to not focus on the things you cannot do well, but rather on things you can. Once you can grasp this, you will find that life becomes a great deal easier and a lot happier. Regardless of your limitations, you can push forward every day with mental fortitude and perseverance. Whether you have debilitating back pain or other restrictions, knowing your limits make sense.
Make A List – They Work!
Make a list of your current limitations, and every month check your progress. You’ll see you can move forward even if it’s inches at a time. Set positive goals for yourself to push your limits with baby steps along the way. Remember, anything good worth fighting for causes discomfort and inches us out of our comfort zones.
Let’s Focus On One Step At A Time
It makes good sense to focus on taking our days one step at a time. Meaning, try not to look at things or your disability globally, so to say, but more myopically. At times, we can overwhelm ourselves when we look at the big picture. It might help if you can see the value in today and every day moving forward.
At first, I let my disability corner me and place me in a box where I told myself this would be the rest of my life. Even when I knew percentage-wise, the odds were in my favor. Fear is the true mind-killer, and I knew my fear would lead me down the wrong path.
Moving forward, I pledged to take one day and one step at a time, and slowly, my healing process began. Of course, I made sure I ate healthy foods, exercised the best I could, and surrounded myself with positive thoughts and healing vibes. From there, every day became clearer and made sense. It can happen for you as well.
Accept Your Frustration, Loneliness, Or Anger – Reach Out If You Need Help.
At first, you might experience a multitude of emotions after experiencing your disability. Remember, your feelings are authentic, and you shouldn’t deny them or push them away. Every person walking this planet isn’t running on six cylinders. No one is perfect. We all have issues in our lives, and you don’t have to suppress those feelings.
Acknowledging your emotions is a very healthy and essential part of recovery. Furthermore, always reach out to a medical professional if you can’t shake your depression or anxiety. At first, you might feel uncomfortable doing so, but if your feelings and emotions overrun you, it might be a good idea to reach out.
Use All Available Resources For Your Disability
Of course, you’ll want to ensure you use every resource you have available. It’s a good idea to research to find support groups, community, government, and private resources willing to support you. Make sure you document names, locations, and phone numbers and keep this list handy.
You can also get involved in your local community and reach out to volunteer groups as well. You can find groups in your area more than willing to assist. These types of agencies will help you in a multitude of ways. They can offer services ranging from financial assistance to employment opportunities. They also provide mental health services as well.
The bottom line is never limit yourself by your disability. We are all so much more than that. While everyone’s disability is unique with its nuances both mentally and physically, never let it prevent you from living the fullest life you can.
