How To Get Beautiful Healthy Hair – Good Habits Matter

We all want beautiful healthy hair and good habits do matter. Discovering good habits for your hair is essential for keeping your locks in great condition.

The great news is there are several key things you can do to keep your hair beautiful and healthy and, we are sharing them with you today!

I’ve always taken as much effort into keeping my hair in great shape as I do in keeping my skin in great shape too. Developing good habits for both is essential and it doesn’t have to be a lot of work either. 

There are several key good habits you can get into that will help your journey to beautiful healthy hair easier. 

1 – Get Regular Trims – It might seem like a no-brainer but, I was shocked to discover how many of us don’t get our trims as regularly as we should. I’m sure you hear that 6 to 8 weeks is the suggested timeframe but you can push it to every three months and still keep your hair in great shape. 

Getting a trim doesn’t have to be a stressful event. I’m sure you have experienced when you asked your stylist for a trim and walked out of the salon in tears because they didn’t listen to your request and ended up over cutting your hair. When you talk to your stylist, be sure to STRESS exactly how much of a trim you want.

What I do is after the first snip, I kindly asked them to stop and check the work. It’s best to have one section of hair cut shorter than you want than your entire head. You can trust me on this as I’m a former stylist! They won’t mind and be glad you are satisfied with the outcome. 

2 – Don’t Overuse Product & Give Your Hair A Break! It’s so important never to overuse hair care products. Folks tend to overuse them and glob them until in excessive amounts when all you really need is a very small amount. This goes for everything from hairspray to styling mouse and gels. 

Give your hair a break! The good kind! Try going at least two days a week with no product whatsoever and let your hair breath. It’s bad for your scalp too and can create skin conditions too.

3 – Don’t Brush Too Much! Too much brushing can cause damage to your hair. Yes, brushing your hair is a necessity and has many benefits but over-brushing stretches the hair and will break it too. It’s advised to brush your hair once a day and preferably with a plastic brush. I love my Wet Brush and it never pulls or damages my hair. 

It’s awesome for kids too! No more screaming and throwing a tantrum. I wish this was out when my daughter was little.

4 – Don’t Take Showers That Are Scalding Hot – One of the first things I learned in beauty school was how to take proper care of your hair. The overall health of your hair really depends on its treatment. 

I was surprised to learn that yes, while it feels great to take a hot shower, it’s not great for your hair. It can dry it out and it’s really bad for color-treated hair too. It can actually fade your color out much faster. It’s better for your skin too! 

Take a lukewarm shower instead and avoid overheating your hair and your skin too.

5 – Wear A Hat – Yep, wearing a hat can and will protect your hair and your scalp too. I started wearing hats a lot the past few years and, I love how stylish they look too. The sun will oxidize your hair and dry it out. It also protects your scalp from burning and keeps your hair from dehydrating. If you want healthy beautiful hair wearing hats and protecting your head will get you there!

6 – Deep Conditioning Treatments At Least Once A Week – As a beauty professional, I know the importance of applying a deep conditioning treatment weekly is for your hair. Everyone needs that boost of extra hydration and a deep treatment will get you there. 

I’ve been using an intensive hydration hair masque once a week and my hair never felt or looked better. Deep conditioning treatments will not weigh your hair down but instead, give you that extra boost of hydration your hair and scalp needs. 

8 – Keep Your Hair And Scalp Clean – this is always a heated debate – to shampoo every day or not to shampoo every day – that is the question! 

I’ve washed my hair every day my entire life and, I have very beautiful healthy hair to show for it. I get it, some folks just don’t like to wash their hair daily and that’s fine if it works for you. 

I also love discovering new shampoos and conditioners too. Generally, I find two or three brands I love to use and rotate. If I’m really flipping in love with the results from a shampoo and condition, I’ll keep it in rotation longer.
