Last year, I decided to unearth some of my favorite tips to boost smartphone photography. Luckily, practicing these tips did improve my mobile photography skills! And with new mobile tech rapidly evolving, it’s important to sharpen your skills all the time.

Above all, lighting issues still plague me especially with poor indoor lighting. If you experience the same issues, you’ll want to be sure to sharpen your photography skills as well.

With that said, I feel it’s very important to ensure your lighting techniques improve with every photo to take. If you notice, when outdoors, your mobile does a fine job with lighting. Yet, indoors, it’s an entirely different situation.

Regardless if you own an Android or Apple device, the principles stay the same. Yes, you can learn how to improve and even take good, even spectacular photos by following some simple guidelines.

Below, you’ll discover some of my personal favorite mobile photography tips. More so, one that completely changed how I changed my mobile photography lighting strategy.

My Personal Favorite Mobile Photography Lighting Tips

Below, you’ll find some easy ways you can improve the lighting with your mobile phone.

  1. Always Clean Your Lenses – Dirty lenses greatly impact the way photos process especially when it comes to lighting. A dirty lens will prevent light from entering your phone properly. It will also prevent sharp, crisp, and clear photos. Also be sure to clean your lens properly and do it every time you take photos.
  2. Manually Adjust the Exposure – Having total control over your phone’s exposure produces bright, clean whites! Go into your phone’s camera settings and remember to adjust the exposure beforehand.
  3. Always Use HDR (high dynamic range) For Evenly-Lit Photos – This type of photography always works best with your mobile camera on a tripod. It’s also important to try and stay completely still. HDR will allow you to capture amazing detail in both shadows and highlights of your images.
  4. If Possible, Shoot During the Golden Hour – In order to make the most of natural lighting, always take outdoor photos right after sunrise or before sunset. They call this the Golden Hour for a reason!
  5. Overcast Days Are Your Best Friend – Taking photos on overcast days product amazing images. Why? The clouds diffuse the light and create a soft and even exposure. When shooting on overcast days, take them when the sun is still high in the sky.
  6. Window Lighting – I love using the natural light from windows when indoors. The window helps block the harsh sun and works as a diffuser. Look for days when the sun hits the window at a 45-degree angle.
