6 Ways To Easily Add A Pop Of Color To Your Home
I’m always surprised at the number of folks who are actually afraid to add color to their homes.
It’s easy and inexpensive to safely add a pop of color to your space without having to spend a fortune or worrying about it looking like a scene from a comic strip.
Prior to purchasing our townhouse, I was always nervous about using color in our decor. I designed in neutral tones in fear the decor wouldn’t be cohesive and any one particular room or accent would blend into the rest of the environment. I played it – well yes, safe.
I decided to open my decorating third eye and take a colorful leap into the exciting! It was a slow progression at first. I tested the waters by adding the elements slowly – a colorful accent piece on an end table or a lampshade with a burst of color.
And so it began – a wonderful journey into the world of using color to brighten my home and my outlook!
When using color to decorate your home, there is a rule to follow. It’s called the 60-30-10 Rule. I always try to keep this rule in mind when making decorating decisions.
When decorating a particular room, divide the colors into percentages:
60% of a dominant color
30% of a secondary color
10% of an accent color
Translated to a room setting, it typically means:
60% of the room’s color is the walls
30% of the room’s color is the upholstery
10% of the room’s color is, say, an accent piece or a floral arrangement
This is my journey into playing with adding color to my home. I hope you get some useful tips and tricks too!
1. Colorful Accent Pieces
The beauty of adding colorful vignettes to your home decor is you can be as creative as you like, or you can play it safe. You get to decide. Test the waters at first. Try something like this. Here are some examples of some pops of color I use around my home.
2. Kick it up a Notch with a Colorful a Lampshade
Using lampshades to add a pop of color is a brilliant way to safely dip your feet into the colorful waters of your decor. Even this simple and darling red lamp shade adds a touch of elegance to any end tabletop! Remember to add a coordinating candle color too.
3. Incorporate Floral Centerpieces
I never thought I could ever appreciate the beauty and functionality of fake floral centerpieces until I started using them throughout my home. I began looking for some upscale centerpieces that were on sale.
For instance, I knew that a local furniture store was having a sale and they sold a huge amount of accent pieces for the home as well. BAM! I hit pay dirt – they were featuring all the floral centerpieces at 40% off.
I was able to procure high-end floral centerpieces that were originally well over $100 for almost half the price! Now, I have several colorful decorative arrangements around my home!
Adding pops of color with floral centerpieces is the perfect way to safely add some color to any space in your home.
Here’s a centerpiece I easily made for our foyer. I love the pops of purple and pink it adds to my entryway.
4. Adding Decorative Artwork
Adding colorful paintings to your home is a win-win! It’s another great and safe way to add that burst of color to any room. Adding that one element changed the entire scope of the room.
My office has a red day bed which has transformed the entire atmosphere! I also adding color by adding an accent to one of the walls. I also used the wall art as an accent for the red in the daybed.
5. Taking the Plunge by Adding Colorful Furniture
After a few years of testing the waters and having fun with adding color to my home, I decided to add a red daybed to my office. I can’t tell you how outstanding this piece is! I use it for guests and it’s not only beautiful but functional as well.
6. Use Lighting Fixtures To Accent Color
You’d be surprised how adding lighting elements with a pop of color can transform your entire space. I wanted something other than the traditional chandelier for my dining room when I located this beauty.
It had the exact burst of color I was looking for while not being overwhelming. I also purchased the pendant lighting to match in my kitchen.

I hope you feel more confident about playing with color in your space! As you can see, it really brightens up your home and adds cheer and designer decor to every room.

Those are some wild light covers you have there. They are really cool, and unique. I love how your red couch just fits perfectly in your room. I love adding bits of color throughout the house.
Very interesting but to me, the less color the better. I LOVE black and white with one accent color. Or very subtle colors. I never have liked bright colors in a home — outside or in a wardrobe, that’s a different story. So, no, I am not afraid of color just have strong feelings about them in my home. (Except for flowers – the brighter the better)
Thanks for explaining some design principles and illustrating them. I, too, like those light fixtures. So much fun! What a conversation piece.
Color is my middle name! And my first name! And my surname!

I really like your 60-30-10 rule as a framework for color coordination. Many people are too hesitant to add some real color to their decorating style – this perhaps is a good rule of thumb to get them to be a bit more adventurous in decor! Sometimes more is more – adding several colors together can be more complementary/less harsh than a single bold color against a more neutral background (although the traditional accent color certainly still has its place).
Hi Janice, I agree totally! I could never understand why some folks don’t like using color in their homes. I’m glad you enjoyed the post and hope to see you again soon!

Have to commend you on having courage to use colors and adding them up to your home. And your 60-30-10 rule is brilliant! It’s definitely not easy to use bright colors, and you really have to identify which works and which doesn’t, for a certain space. And the use of accents and lighting fixtures will absolutely add up to the look. But have to always remember to not overdo everything. Thanks for sharing!
thanks much for the lovely comment! I love that rule too. Makes decorating so much easier! Thanks much for stopping by and have a great weekend!

I really like your 30-60-10 rule. I have always struggled with knowing how much color to add in my decor. I think I tend to just stick to neutrals because I’m always worried about not doing the right colors, and especially about doing too much color. This helps a ton in knowing what to do! Thanks!
Hi Veronica, Thanks much! I’m so glad you enjoyed the post. That rule is awesome. I use it all the time for decorating with color. It allows for the perfect balance and just the right pops of color. Hope to see you again real soon!
