Of course, we want our children to experience the benefits of a positive learning environment at home. But doing so can create some challenges, especially if your child is new to homeschooling. More so, making their environment beneficial means more than creating a cozy space for them to sit. For them to flourish academically, we need to take the right steps.

More importantly, if your child struggles with homeschooling, there are things you can do to create a positive learning environment. As we know, your child’s surroundings can affect the way they learn and grow. Often, this means more than ensuring they have the right tech equipment at home. While supplying them with the right materials to learn, there’s far more to it.

When achieving my M.Ed in education, I learned copious amounts of essential information about how children learn. And it’s far more reaching than bombarding them with books and homework. Creating a positive learning environment means more than you think. And can transform how students learn and absorb information.

Below, we will look at ways you can help your child excel in their new learning environment.

Positive Learning Environment

1 – Remove Distractions Is Essential But Not Always Easy

Learning models show that distractions can greatly affect how students learn. More so, this is true in children without learning disabilities as well. Therefore, it’s essential to create a learning environment that’s distraction-free as much as possible. Anything can easily distract your child during the learning process, so it’s necessary to inspect the learning environment carefully beforehand.

Furthermore, it’s important to know since each child’s learning experiences differ, what works for one might not work for the other. For example, placing the learning environment in a secluded area works best but is not always possible. On the other hand, you can try adding a room divider (#ad) to create a private space for your child as well. And make a classroom-like environment with them as well.

In addition, you can add an affordable top of the desk privacy screen (#ad) as well. And this will help create a private area with far fewer distractions. And you can fold it away when your child finishes their lessons. More so, your child’s learning environment is more important than you think. And preventing them from visual, physical, or auditory distractions is a top priority when creating a positive learning environment for them.

Other Methods For Removing Distractions

Another method that works for some is noise-canceling children’s headphones (#ad). Playing binaural music for them does show positive results. Often, you can play classical or calming music while children study to keep them focused and on task. Of course, using wordless music helps encourage your child’s brain, and studies show it does work. It also can benefit sleep issues or induce relaxation as well and create a positive learning environment.

Because a cluttered environment can also be distracting, make sure the remote learning setup at home includes some shelving and organizing storage bins (#ad) to keep supplies well organized and the desk space clear. If you don’t have ample room to store the storage bins, you can also opt for slim storage boxes that slide under beds (#ad) when the school day is over.

2 – Use Natural Light To Create A Positive Learning Environment

One of the best homeschool space ideas involves inviting the largest star in our solar system into the home classroom. For example, place your home learners near windows that get plenty of sunlight. Natural light will help to energize your kids and keep them feeling more cheerful as the school day goes on. Your family room with skylights and sliding door may do the trick, as can a desk near their bedroom windows.

More so, try to avoid using fluorescent lights for homeschooling. These types of lights can blink and disrupt their visual capacities. Also, they can cause other unpleasant side effects like nausea and lethargy and affect immune systems. As a result, your child’s learning ability can experience a loss of retention by over 50% and prevent optimal learning.

Always aim for a naturally sunny location while you don’t want to position your child in blinding direct sunlight. Using natural light will help you create a positive learning environment and let them feel the joy of daylight on their skin.

3 – Think About Changing The Learning Environment

The outdoors can make create a positive learning environment for many students and often does. But you’ll want to make sure the goings-on outside doesn’t work as a distraction for your child. More so, there are a few options you can use when it’s a nice day, and you want the learning to take place outdoors.

For instance, you can transform a covered porch, gazebo, or garden table into a classroom. But, of course, you’ll want to do this only on days when it’s nice outside. If you have any other places outdoors that might work, you can easily transform them into a working classroom. The outdoors can provide a wonderful place for your child to breathe fresh air and connect with nature.

In addition, you’ll want to make sure you have a powerful router and WIFI set up for their internet connection. You can also move the classroom into the garage as long as it’s dry and well-insulated. Either way, depending on your child’s needs, the outdoors can become a wonderfully positive place for learning.

Eventually, your kids will return to in-person school, and you can transform your home back into a regular, non-school home. But for now, rest assured that you can give your kids a wonderful online school experience by being creative in using the space in your home.
